“We leave you two alone for an hour and this is what happens?” Zoie asks.

The four of us, along with the rest of the student body, are gathered out front to watch Drew Carlson being escorted out of school and into the back of a squad car.

In handcuffs.

Dad hadn’t blinked when Cole and I told him that Drew was a drug dealer. He simply picked up the phone, and minutes later, our cells were blowing up with text after text from classmates.

They’re searching Drew’s locker.

They found pills.

Cops are on the way.

It really is impressive how quickly word gets around in high school.

And the news is about to go viral, because hundreds of phones are in the air, recording every single moment of Drew’s arrest. The faculty had finally given up on trying to force the students back to class. We weren’t going, anyway. Plus, I don’t think the teachers wanted to miss this, either.

“He just turned eighteen last week,” someone says.

Cole and I exchange a look. That makes him an adult. Which means he’s probably going to jail. I’m okay with that, except for the fact that Scout hasn’t said a word.

She’s still quiet when I drop her off at her uncle’s house. Doc Ramsey’s probably not going to be in a great mood, considering his high school dealer was just arrested. The blow back on Dr. Feelgood could be epic.

I hadn’t taken that into consideration when I spilled my guts to my father.

“Why don’t you spend the night at our house?”

“I’ll be fine, Wyatt.”

“He’s not going to be in a good mood. I don’t want him taking it out on you.”

“I thought about that,” she says softly. “But then I remembered he drove to Johnson City for some medical seminar. He’ll be gone for the next three days.”

That makes me feel a little better.

“Then you really should stay with us. Tomorrow’s Friday. Spend the whole weekend with us.”

“Maybe. But I think I want to be alone tonight. I’ve got a lot on my mind, and I really want to journal. I need to get some shit off my chest.”

I sigh heavily. “You’re pissed.”

“I’m not. I’m . . . sad.”

“Because of Drew?”

“Not just because of Drew. I’ll tell you about it later. Not tonight.”

Honestly, she’d been quiet since her therapy session yesterday, but I figured that was probably normal after seeing a shrink.

“Okay. But don’t feel sorry for Drew Carlson. He deserves whatever happens to him.”

“Maybe. But his life is probably over. And that’s my fault.”

“Your fault? I’m the one who told my father—”

“And I told you.”

“You just confirmed it. I’ve suspected for a long time.”

“That’s right. I confirmed it. And now he’s in jail. And so is my mother. And my uncle will probably be there eventually. Jail seems to be a common theme in my life, so I have no idea why you want to have anything to do with me.”

“Scout, none of that is your fault!”

“Drew Carlson’s in jail. That’s my fault. And my mom’s in jail. That’s my fault, too.
